Tranekær Slot

In the middle of the village of Tranekær stands one of the most photographed sights on all of Langeland: a deep red castle with a spire-topped, octagonal stair tower, surrounded by a moat and a large English-style park. Most people driving past on the Tranekær Slotrute or walking a stretch of the Øhavsstien stop to look — the castle sits so centrally in the village that it's almost impossible to miss.

Open to visitors for only a few weeks a year

Tranekær Slot is still an inhabited, private estate, and the main building has no fixed opening hours. Instead, the estate offers guided tours during the summer holidays, typically in weeks 27-31: Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays in week 27, with Thursdays added in the following weeks. Tours start at 11am and last around an hour and a half, with a guide taking you through the castle's and the Ahlefeldt-Laurvig family's history while you walk through parts of the building not normally open to the public.

Each tour holds up to 50 participants, and tickets are best booked online in advance — if spots remain, you can also pay by MobilePay at the door. Children under 8 go free. The meeting point is the castle courtyard itself, and since it's a 10-15 minute walk from the car parks at Tickon Parken and Galaxen, it's worth allowing extra time and arriving about 10 minutes before the tour starts. Note that there are no toilets available at the castle itself — the nearest are at the car parks. If you're travelling in a larger group of 25 to 50 people, a private tour can be booked year-round.

One of the country's oldest homes

Tranekær is considered Denmark's oldest inhabited house, with roots back to the early 1200s, and has been owned by the Ahlefeldt-Laurvig family since 1659 — originally as part of a dowry following a wedding still told today as one of Langeland's most dramatic love stories. The red facades that are now the castle's trademark are actually a fairly recent feature: until the mid-1900s, the castle was painted pink. In 2019-2020, ownership changed hands for the first time in 356 years, though the former count's family still lives at Tranekær today.

The park, art and nature around the castle

While the main building can only be experienced from the inside on a guided tour, the surrounding castle park is open and worth a visit in its own right. Here you'll find both Tickon, where artworks are left to change and decay with nature, and Medicinhaverne, a collection of medicinal plants from around the world. Close by is also Tranekær Slotsmølle, a working windmill from 1846 with a café and small museum — a natural place to pause, whether you've just been on a castle tour or are simply walking through the park.
