The Art Towers
Along Langeland's narrow country roads stand 12 former transformer towers, decommissioned by the utility company in the early 1980s. Today they're Denmark's longest art exhibition — each tower its own small gallery, free to visit all year.
When 12 transformer towers became art
In the early 2000s, local artist Hans Kjær had an idea: what if the old transformer towers that Langelands Elforsyning used to step high voltage down to household current could become something else once they were decommissioned? The collaboration between artists and the utility company began in 2003, and in 2010 — to mark the company's 100th anniversary — the project expanded to the 12 towers now spread across the island.
One tower, one artist
Each tower holds its own small gallery, 1.5 by 1.5 metres with a full 8 metres to the ceiling, and each artist works alone with their tower for a three-year period before passing it on. Some paint, others build sculptures or light installations — Frank Fenriz's tower at Botofte Strandvej goes a step further, letting you scan a QR code to see the work in augmented reality on your phone. The current period runs until May 2030.
From Lohals to Bagenkop
You can always spot an art tower by the blue-and-red sign of three connected towers on its facade — a small nod that looks almost like an old coat of arms. The towers are spread across the whole island, from Lohals in the north to Bagenkop in the south, so a tour of them all becomes a tour of the Langeland landscape too.
Free, all year round
The project is now run by a foundation, with Langelands Elforsyning, Langeland Municipality and the local tourism and business association as partners. All 12 towers are free to visit, year-round — you can stop at a couple or take your time finding them all.
